Marybeth: “Mom voice” scares black bear

The latest viral YouTube video proves what we moms have always known: “Mom voice” speaks volumes. Check out the bear’s encounter with a woman named Nishanto:

Notice on the video the man doing the filming yells, “Nishanto, the bear’s here,” as though this is something that happens all the time. Like the bear has just stopped in for a cup of coffee or to borrow the weed wacker.

In fact, YouTube user Nayana Grillo filmed the bear’s first visit to his yard ten days earlier. On that visit, the unexpected visitor managed to crack open a container of suet and have himself a little snack. Note the hilarious narration of the menfolk, including something that sounds like baby talk from a fella who refers to the 200+ pound Ursus americanus (American black bear, in “scientific”) as “such a wittle cutey pie.”

I can’t decide if this video series is a cultural statement on the foraging habits of bears whose habitat has been suburbanized, or the woosification of men. Your thoughts?

  1. I think she may have a naughty cat that gets on the counter. I recognize that voice.
