Marybeth,

Thank you! We have to consider the "why" when inserting our opinion. Is it because of our pride and possible embarrassment OR are we truly looking out for their best interest? And even still, first considering the long term effects and not damage the family relationship- and when speaking, asking God to give us lips of grace.

The first several stories are all world net daily garbage. Each had been looked into closely and all the conspiracy theories toted have been disproven. The IRS investigation into tea party groups was fair and appropriate. Each one of the groups in question where actively involved in partisan politics. If you endorse candidates then you shouldn't be considered a tax exempt nonprofit social welfare agency. If you or your agency applies for tax exempt status then you should expect a very through review of your finding sources, members, and activities.

I don't get the outrage at A&F. Seems like he's being pilloried for saying something out loud that everyone already knew was true, and that lots of other companies are guilty of too, in their own ways. This guy is rather blunt about it, but seems accurate nonetheless: http://justnotsaid.blogspot.com/2013/05/fat-scandal-at-abercrombie-and-fitch.html

Wow, love this. I feel like I have the good husband, the love of my kids, the sense of humor, and a true enjoyment of doing kid-friendly activities, but, boy, the housework is a bear. I just can't quite get myself motivated to see it as I should (and as your mom does) as a job worth doing well and feeling prideful (in the good sense of that word) about. I need order and routine to get it going, but that seems out of reach right now. Instead, I just generally feel ashamed at how I'm lacking in this department! I hope your mom's matter-of-fact attitude of expectation -- which also happens to be *my* mom's attitude -- rubs off on me and inspires me to work a bit harder on this aspect of mom-ness. Thanks for a wonderful and uplifting post!

I am a bit disappointed in your advice. I understand how difficult a "sullen" teenager can be, but I know the answer isn't asking them to always be upbeat and happy. In fact, I've found it better to honor a person's temperament than to fight it. My advice would have been to set some standards for behavior but validate that the teenager may not feel up to talking or sharing. It's ok not to be the talker but the listener.

As I told my children from like 7 on. You live in a room in MY house. This is not YOUR room, so if I want to go into this room I will and if I want to search thru your stuff, i will. Never had a problem because I started to tell them early on. It works.

You are absolutely right. We have a daughter in her early teens. In this age of cell phones, Facebook, Internet, etc., kids may be (and likely are) exposed to things that are unwholesome, perhaps even dangerous, and are vulnerable in ways they don't even realize. We monitor what our daughter is doing because we love her and want to protect her. She is too immature to recognize these things herself. She needs to benefit from our guidance, protection, wisdom, knowledge, and insight until she is old enough to navigate the waters of life on her own. And we do have an open relationship where she tells me a lot--but that doesn't mean she tells me *everything.* I'm not throwing my daughter to the wolves in the name of "respecting her privacy."

Marybeth's too classy to pimp her own stuff here, so let me do it! This topic is discussed in much greater detail in her wonderful book Bringing Up Geeks, which was for me, an absolute game changer, eye opener, and soul lifter.

If you've ever looked around at some of the cultural norms related to raising children and wondered 'Can't we do better than this?'- well yes, we can. In that book she explains how her family did so and she provides a lot of practical strategies and encouragement so you can "hold that bar up" too.

Editor's note: I swear I didn't ask this lovely commenter to write this comment. But since he did...here's where you can get the book: http://www.amazon.com/Bringing-Up-Geeks-Childhood-Grow-Up-Too-Fast/dp/0425221563/ref=la_B001JSEBIE_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1366058607&sr=1-2

" I don’t have a thin skin"

Your censorship of even the mildest and most polite of comments at your own site suggests otherwise.

"If your standard response to ideas you find uncomfortable is to dismiss their proponents as whiners, idiots, nincompoops, slackers, or what have you, you’re going to miss out on engaging with a lot of challenging ideas, and that’s a shame. "

It seems like this is exactly what you chose to do on your own site: not address your critics argument and instead call them names.
