Carol: Does Paul Ryan’s “Hotness” Matter?
Over at Powerline, Steven Hayward has posted an enormously entertaining music video extolling the “hotness” of Paul Ryan. He also notes the existence of the Tumblr site entitled “Hey Girl, It’s Paul Ryan” — also highly amusing.
Frankly, I’ve long thought Mitt Romney is the best looking guy in politics. Really handsome. And Paul Ryan is cute as a button, too. All that being said, I really couldn’t care less what they look like.
Although the Ryan stuff is good for a giggle, it always strikes me as silly when women try to ape the (normal) male impulse to objectify the opposite sex, since we don’t really work that way (the prime example was the original ridiculous diet coke ad where women were supposedly ogling a male construction worker — have you ever really seen women genuinely moved to behave like that in real life, without it being some kind of quasi-feminist “statement”? Please.).
Does anyone out there think stuff like this really sways votes? (If it does, please do more! Now!!!). I don’t have any moral, ethical (or aesthetic!) objection. They both look good!
It’s just that it seems supremely irrelevant to me whether the people running the country are “eye candy”; after all, we’ve already got a president who describes himself that way . . .
